Concept:
The world financial crisis that broke out in 2008 has shaken confidence in capitalist economy. A significant amount of people in various countries no longer believes that democracy and capitalism are natural allies. The austerity programmes imposed on heavily indebted countries by the European Union and in the International Monetary Fund are an outrageous contrast to the rescue programmes for the „system-relevant“ banks, which cost billions of euros. Moreover, the aggravating ecological crisis has raised the question whether capitalism is able to respect the limits of growth. At the Wuppertal conference, the speakers – among them are Nancy Fraser and Wolfgang Streeck – will elucidate the economic, political, social and ecological aspects of the current crisis of capitalism.
